About the author

The author of this blog is Carolina Casañas i Comabella.

I am a international Clinical Psychologist turned researcher, currently based at Oxford. After having worked for several years as a researcher at the University of Oxford’s Departments of Public Health and Psychiatry, I decided to do my PhD at Oxford Brookes University’s Department of Clinical Health Care, within the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences. I obtained my PhD in 2018.

Prior to moving to Oxford (UK) in 2007, I worked as a Clinical Psychologist in palliative care teams in Barcelona (Spain) for over a decade, where I was the coordinator of the Catalan Group of Palliative Care Psychologists. I graduated from Universitat Ramon Llull in Psycho-Pedagogy and from UOC in Clinical Psychology.

In 2009, I successfully completed the King’s College London University MSc in Palliative Care. My MSc thesis explored the views on dignity held by patients, carers and professionals in palliative care. My PhD thesis was titled “Distance Caregivers in Palliative Care: a Mixed Methods Study Exploring the Role of Ehealth”.

I currently work as a systematic reviewer in the very awesome Global Health Economics Team at ICON plc, a job I’m absolutely loving and which is very similar to the kind of work I used to do at the University of Oxford, but in the consultancy sector.

Research Interests

My research interests include palliative and end of life care, older people, oncology, ehealth, evidence synthesis, PROs and person-centred care.

Other research interests include research methods, especially systematic reviews and meta-analyses, and qualitative research in general and Framework Analysis in particular.

Doctoral Research

My PhD at Oxford Brookes University explored the role of ehealth (the use of Information and Communication Technologies, ICT, in healthcare) in distance caregiving, that is, people who have a relative who lives far and is near the end of life.

I was lucky that my external supervisor was Prof Bee Wee, one of the most influential people in the provision of palliative and end of life care in the UK. This doctorate was funded by the (now defunct) NHS South Central Strategic Health Authority.
